CORDINER'S
LAND
The Building is notable for its decorative stone panel
which depicts the emblem for the ancient Cordiner’s
Guild.
The term comes from the French for shoemaker, ‘cordonnier’.
Situated as one of several building around the Western
Gate (West Port), its tradesmen and other residents suffered
from cramped, unventilated conditions typical to the Old
Town closes and stairwells.
There were substantial improvements to the development
of this site to provide better housing which included designs
to better space and ventilation. The site again fell into
disrepair and was neglected for decades until the 1980’s
when it was renovated and modernised.
The three separate buildings of Cordiner’s Land preserve
many original features including balcony walkways, open
staircases, courtyard gardens, a tower and bridge." |
